Vernon Grey British Herdwick Sheepskin Rug

Vernon Grey Genuine Herdwick Sheepskin Rug

This genuine British Herdwick breed sheepskin consists of several shades of grey with some beige highlights. There is some variation with the fleece length, with longer hair around the edges and a slightly shorter curly haired patch in the centre of the rug - this is the spine of the sheep that would have had the rain on it all year and so got flattened down.

The wool has a coarse wiry texture like all genuine Herdwicks, although it is softer in places, there is some very matted wool found beneath the surface. The coarseness is what keep the sheep warm in their native Lake District mountain home They are often matted, particularly on bigger rugs like this from older sheep, due to living outside in this occasionally harsh environment.

The UK has more sheep breeds than any other country - over 60 and counting - and many more cross breeds. Glencroft British sheepskin rugs are 100% British and entirely by-products of the meat industry - that means they are from British sheep, tanned in a British tannery, and hand finished in our Yorkshire Dales warehouse.

Richard hand finishes 100-200 sheepskin rugs every week (watch how here), with most going to specialist independent retailers across the country. We randomly pick a few out for sale online every few weeks. Once they're gone they're gone!
